Its been a great 2011, looking back I have played a hell of a lot of dope parties in the last year. 2011 has been busy on the dance floor, some where along the way I managed to support 3 of my heros, Ice Cube, Public Enemy and Ghostface Killah. Massive shouts to Urban Fusion who brought these huge names to Cardiff. Also managed a Redbull Three style UK Final, narrowly missing out on the top spot. Towards the end of the year I started repping for Serato which is a huge honour and I am slightly baffled that people will stand and listen to me talk for an hour?

So more of the same for 2012.

Was lucky enough to be invited to play Birmingham's premier hip hop and breaks night on Friday. Run by Mylz Heducation has been going for 10 years. It was great to visit osme family and friends and party in the Custard Factory. Memories of the old Med Bar are still strong and it was nice to reminisce whilst booting out some slammers on the Heducation system.

Thats right, I have teamed up with the big dogs at Serato HQ to host an evening of Serato science at Catapults new store in Cardiff! With special guest Cheeba gracing the decks (Solid Steel) this is a must for all wanna be Serato converts and beginners. Between my self and Cheeba we will covering all the basic functionality of Serato and answering your questions. There will be live demos from my self and Cheeba, plus a hands on session.

The Serato class will look at the key features of the software and why people use it as a DJ tool. We will demonstrate the basic set up out of the box, the playback functions of the software with vinyl and CDJs and how it works. This class offers a concise look at some of the features including file organisation and trouble shooting that make Serato so easy to use. For any potential Serato convert this is for you.

Catapult will be holding a one day promotional sale on Serato to coincide with the class providing you with a one off chance to purchase at a discount. There will also be a question and answer session, giveaways and our popular raffle.

Hello all, hope your enjoying summer. I have been busy working on a new Drum and Bass mix, something I have been meaning to do for a while now. I have always been a fan of Drum and Bass spending many Thursday nights at Enthusiasm (Cardiff D n B night) during my early 20's raving to the hospital roster on rotation most weeks.

The idea of the mix was to put some old and new drum and bass together with some nice cuts over the top. The mix is just a selection of tunes I have enjoyed over the years. some have specific memories, ie Marky's LK was the summer tune in my first year of uni and he is still one of the best DJs I have seen . As drum and bass is such a fast moving dubplate genre I thought it would be nice to include some older tunes from the likes of Krust, Adam F, and Roni Size.

Ice Cube

Lets be honest live hip hop can be really shit. Usually rappers are lazy with their performances, they spit endless freestyles that no one really cares about and the whole thing sounds nothing like the banging album track you have grown to love. There are exceptions to this rule (KRS ONE included) and Ice Cubes show really ticked all the boxes and I came away feeling like a teenager again.

One thing that puzzled me is why is Ice Cube touring? He must be pretty well off as he is a bonified Hollywood star (Boyz in the Hood, Anaconda, Friday, Three Kings etc) so is in no real need for cash. He has not released an album of late to the best of my knowledge so the only conclusion I can come to is that he is touring for the love of being on stage.

I was told specifically not to play any NWA or Ice Cube by his manager pretty obvious I would of thought, but then I have heard stories of a Rusko support DJ playing 3 of his songs just before he went on! When I mentioned Cypress Hill (Cube had a long standing beef with his fellow West Coast rappers resulting in the dis track King of the hill) I heard a 'Fuck Cypress Hill' shout from the merch stand.

So to the show. As I mentioned before it was well put together, Cube entered the stage to theme from Shaft bringing with him DJ Crazy Tunes, Cube senior and his son. Most importantly Westside Connection member WC. Together Cube and Dub smashed through an array of hits each with its own intro and crowd response part. We heard Straight outta Compton, Bow Down, A good day, How we Do, Put your Back in to it, Hoo bangin and many more.

A great gig and life time dream to throw up a gang sign with Amerrikkkas Most Wanted!

Beach Break Live 2011

Just returned from four days of playing at what arguably one of the best new festivals in the UK. Beach Break is a student only affair situated in Pembry Country Park in Carmarthen. Over the four days the likes of Tinie Tempah, Example, Magnetic Man, sub Focus Shy FX Nero and many more rock place hard. I was Djing in the VIP tent along side my buddy DJ Swagga.

Despite despite the first 2 days of torrential rain the ground and the site did not descend in to a muddy waste land. On the day 3, the sun came out, the beach was packed and we played a couple of sets on the the infamous DJ truck!

We played some fun sets and had a great time on the beach, managed to link some old pals in the Chai Wallah tent including DJ Moneyshot and super MC Inja. Big shouts to the Cardiff uni crew, had a great time see you next year.

Back in 2004 the Brothers Grimm aka Kaptin, Dregz and Ruffstylz opened a short lived hip hop shop deep in the back lanes of Roath , Cardiff. The Hideout was a place for graff writers to paint, DJ's and Emcees to battle and breakers to Jam.

These two video's showcase one of the best battles hosted at the hideout. Featuring Gritty, Mudmowth, Ralph Rip Shit, Mayor, Kaptin, Ruffstylz, Sasquatch, guest rappers Dre infinate, Ghost and many more. It just goes to show how strong the scene was back then and how far we have all come. As Kaptin said we all look very young here!

I have fond memories of the hip hop scene at this time, djs had real skills, something that seems to be missing in this digital age.

I woke up today today to numerous text messages from friends informing me of Nate Dogg's death. Like many teenagers in the 90's I grew up listening to endless Gangster rap, Nate Dogg was a key component in the G Funk sound. He contributed to some of hip hops greatest' songs including Warrren G's regulate, Dr Dre's Next Episode, Snoops Doggystyle album. Nate's list of guest appearance is huge. At one point he was the go to man in hip hop for choruses and hooks. I will never forget the moment during the up in Smoke Tour when he walks out on stage for his Next Episode verse. It was simply epic. He will be remembered for his unique soulful singing style and guest appearances on some hip hops greatest moments.

So to celebrate some of his best moments I am reposting my best of Nate Dog Mix , The Doggs Bollocks. Pour out a little liquor, light a blunt, throw up a W and reminisce.

64 Bar Music

Hello all, I have kindly been asked to take part in 64 Bar music a producer and Dj collaboration that is pretty dope, here's the details.

64barmusic is based on a simple concept. The friends on www.ninjatune.net/forum got together to create homemade mixes of their own music. Contributors were only given two rules. Make the song 64 bars long, and at an agreed tempo. After that, they were told to get creative. Anything goes. The idea is to see just how many grooves / angles / styles can be found at a set tempo. And it seems there are lots. Curated by Cardiff based K0va5, 64barmusic now has over 25 producers who have participated in the four mix albums to date.

My mix will be completed by the end of February and will feature production from the likes of Mike Ladd, Dr Rubber Funk, Moneyshot, K0va5 and many more.

Killer Tomato has been charged with splicing the 30 something tracks submitted for the fifth64barchallenge mix, and if his vigorous head nodding is anything to go by, it’s something he’s going to enjoy.

“There’s a broad range of producers on there,” he observed. And he’s right. Not only broad in terms of age and profile, but broad in terms of geography.

Lets see, in this mix there are contributors based as far a field as China and Canada, Australia and France and that makes for a canvas of colours perfect for a painter of sounds.

To extend this slightly dodgy metaphor, Killer Tomato now is the man with the brushes and easel… painters use easels right?

Anyhow, making this mix is right up KT’s street. He said: “I first heard about 64abarmusic through the blog site, there was quite a lot of buzz. And then Kovas actually called me up and asked if I wanted to get involved.

“There’s some really tight production on there. You’ve got the likes of Moneyshot, Rubberfunk and more it’s a privilege to be working with these people

“I’ll be using Abelton Live to make the mix. I won’t be time stretching and warping, but just using it to sequence the sections I’ll mix on the turntables. Then I’ll add some cuts and master it.”

Over the last few months Catapult Records have hosted Dj and production master classes covering Ableton, Novation, and many other software packages. This month Neil Trix from Focusrite gave an in depth Ableton lesson. The session was very in formative and was a great chance to ask questions and share ideas with fellow Dj's and producers. Catapult had also put on a nice little sale on DJ equipment. I picked up a pair of Krk Rockit 5's for the studio at a competitive price. These master classes happen every couple of months and are well worth attending whatever level you are.

I have only been using Ableton for a couple of months and the information given away for free at these sessions has hugely helped.

Some great prizes where won in the raffle including, Ableton, a Novation launch Pad, plus T shirts, hoodies and record bags.

2010 was a pretty busy year for me, Killer T. First off I entered the DMC Champs. After a 5 year break I managed to get to the UK Final with a routine put together in a matter of days. It was great to hang out with the old DMC crew and see some friends from my scratching youth. In October I qualified for the UK Final of the Redbull Freestyle competition and almost won the thing. Another great night and got to meet one of my heroes, A - Trak. Through out the year I have played at some great clubs and parties. the club scene seems more alive than ever. I have meet some great people in 2010 and been exceptionally busy.

So more of the same in 2011. I have a few new mixes in the pipeline with MC Louis Boston, collectively known as 'Money Making Brothers', plus guest scratches on a few artists tracks from the Associated Minds label (Ruffstylz and Chino XL). Plus I have a few new residencies starting up which should be big.

So back to the grind, new mixes and music to be posted shortly.

Red Bull Thre3style Dj Finals

Just got back from the Thre3style Dj Finals at Koko London. First off I just want to mention how great the support from Cardiff was. About 30 strong crew rolled up to Koko from South Wales and represented hard. I travelled up with Astrosnooze, Kaptin and Party Stu. Redbull had kindly provided first class travel and a hotel.

Competitions are always a battle of nerves. Having competed in DMC many times I was used to the pre stage nerves, but had to remind my self not to get too excited. I find keeping a cool head and strong focus helps going into competitive situations. I always try not to pay too much attention to the competition just focus on the set.

I was drawn 6th out of the 8 DJs competing, after Astrosnooze, which was nice as we where on stage together, plus the Cardiff crowd where hyped and ready. I was really pleased with my set, I pulled off all the technical aspects, the mixes was tight and the crowd responded to the introduction and ending well. I really thought the title was in the bag, but got beaten by Santero.

Overall it was a fun night I was please with my performance and more than happy with the crowd response. It was great to meet Kissy Sell Out and A Trak, as well as Sinden and TY.

Red Bull Thre3style Dj Competition.

Last week Redbull's international DJ comp rolled into Cardiff for the South west leg of their UK Tour. Headed by Kissy Sellout, the competion focus more on mixing and tune selection than your normal DJ battle. If anything its quite a refreshing alternative to the head to head turntablist battle. The rules are as follows, play a minimum of 3 genres over 15 minutes, Djs are marked on crowd response record selection and technical ability.

I was up first. I had planned my set over two days and hit it almost perfectly. With few people in the club there was little crowd response so I managed to get through on technical ability and tune selection.

So I am through to the UK final in Koko's London on the 17th of November. If anyone would like to come down I have a number of concessions guest list places, email me and I will put you on the list.

The last 4 weeks have been pretty nuts. What with the student term starting many new club nights and promotions have sprung up to cash in. This is good for me as I am currently playing 6 nights a week. Its a gruelling schedule but great to have so much work. A good malt loaf will see me through a dj set! In the last few weeks I have supported the likes of Zane Lowe, Yoda and Skream. It was topped off buy playing records to Michael Jordan who was in town for the Ryder Cup. Surreal was an understatement. Any way with two many events to focus on here a selection of photos and videos that show what I have been up to.

Last week I was asked by the Associated Minds Crew, to join them at the Shop Project in Newport. The project takes empty shops in the city centre and opens them up to DJs, break dancers and rappers to come and be creative and encourage newcomers to take part. The event was run by Dj Winchester who I joined on the decks for a light hearted scratch jam. We where accompanied by Ruffstylz and Ralph Rip Shit on mic duties.

DMC Report

I have not been on the DMC stage for more than 5 years so to be in a UK Final with barely any practice was unexpected. DMC Finals consists of a lot of waiting around backstage with other nervous DJS chewing whats left of their nails before they go and smash out a 6 minute routine. The competition and format has moved on a lot since I last entered. Mostly due to the use of custom dubplates. This is where DJs press up their routines on to two or more records. The benefits are smoother transitions and the ability to have pretty much any sample you can get you hands on. To be fair sets done in this way are extremely musical, juggles flow nicely into the next. Over all the end result is better. But I do miss seeing a DJ like Noize, getting through a stack of records and really working a set. Sonically its hard to compete against DJs on dubs, but enough excuses.

If I enter next year I will probably have conformed to the trend and have a set of my own pristine battle records. Again props to Jeppa who fucking smashed it so tight his last snare drum was right on the 6 minute mark. Thanks to Sally and all the DMC crew nice to see you chaps again. Killer Tomato Qualifies for the UK DMC Finals!

After my last minute efforts at the Cardiff South West DMC Heats, I have qualified as a runner up for the UK Finals. This has always been one of my goals as a DJ which I almost gave up on 5 years ago. So I will be representing Cardiff at the UK Finals on the 15th of July. If anyone wants to support it would be great to see you there.

Last weekend the UK DMC heat rolled in to Cardiff for the first time in 5 years. I had not entered a DJ battle in as many years, but the lure of a Dj battle was too much to resist. With just one days practice I decided to enter. I must admit the switch from Serato back to vinyl was a strange one, but is was fun digging out all my old routines and battle records. I was slightly apprehensive about entering as most battle Djs roll with custom pressed battle vinyls. I decided to keep my set simple and to the point. My main aim was to pull of a clean routine, anything else was a bonus. I managed to bumble my way through the eliminations in third place with some 3 click flares and a wonky beat juggle. In the main event I was up against the likes of former UK Champ Asian Hawk and IDA Battle Champ DJ Rasp, both dope in their own right. So third from last I stepped on stage set my records and battle commenced. Surprisingly I pulled of a clean tight set of juggles and some nice cuts and avoided the jibbering bag of nerves that usually takes over when on the DMC stage. I managed a 2nd place spot, big shouts to Dj Rasp who was super tight and Asian Hawk for his musical tunrtablism.
